A department-commissioned study found that Louisiana could support five composite plants, which would cost $15 million to $20 million, with each employing 40 to 50 people, Short said. The composite decking market is estimated at $2.4 billion for 2008, Short said. “If we could even carve off 10 percent of that, it would get us back to $200 million to $250 million … for just decking alone,” Short said. If all goes well, in five years Louisiana could be looking at a $500 million to $1 billion industry, Short said. Wu said the total market for composites could be even bigger when one includes other commercial applications, such as bumpers and dashboards in cars and trucks. The composites can be adapted to these uses by increasing the percentage of plastic used to 70 percent or so, Wu said. And the composites have an additional advantage; unlike fiberglass, the composites can be recycled. The proliferation of plastic resin types has made it difficult for the recycling industry to sort out all of the contaminants, Wu said. The result has been an increase in plastic waste. In Europe, the auto industry will be required to recycle 95 percent of car parts and materials by 2015, Wu said.
